3 Things Locals Know About IRONMAN Week in Kona (That Visitors Don't)

Every year, Kona transforms during IRONMAN week. Athletes from around the world arrive on Big Island to take on one of the most iconic endurance races in the world. The roads fill with cyclists and runners, Aliʻi Drive comes alive, and the entire Kona community feels the energy.

For first-time visitors, IRONMAN Kona can feel busy and overwhelming. But we know there’s more to race week than the starting line, finish line, and crowds.

If you're visiting Kona for the IRONMAN World Championship, here are a few local tips that can help you experience the island.

1. Fuel Up at Kona Coffee & Tea

One of the first things you'll notice during IRONMAN week is how early Kona comes alive as athletes are often out training before sunrise. With increased traffic and race-related road closures throughout the week, giving yourself extra travel time is essential.

It's also one of the best reasons to embrace an early morning in Kona whether you’re going for a walk, a run or just to grab some 100% Kona Coffee. We're open everyday from 6AM to 6PM. Race day hours may vary but check with our staff!

Wake up with the sun, watch the community come alive on Palani Road from our lanai before the day's heat and crowds arrive. Sometimes, the quietest hours of the morning are the most memorable.

2. Join Us for “The Cool Down” Event

At Kona Coffee & Tea, we believe that bringing our community together during IRONMAN week is just as important as welcoming athletes from around the world.

This year, we're opening our doors to everyone for an afternoon dedicated to local health and wellness. It's an opportunity to connect with community businesses, discover wellness resources, and celebrate the people and organizations helping our island thrive.

Join us Wednesday, October 7th, from 2–6 PM for an afternoon of health, wellness, connection, and community at Kona Coffee & Tea. Jump into our yoga and HIIT workshops with The Yoga Nest and Ho’omana Strength & Conditioning, take an ice bath, join ROUVY for an Athlete Talk Story, learn about COSurfboards surf club and many more local businesses that make Kona so unique.

Whether you're an athlete, a visitor, or a local, you're invited to stop by, meet local wellness businesses, and take a moment to recharge during the excitement of race week. Because IRONMAN week is about more than the race—it's about the people and community that make Kona such a special place to be.

3. Step Away From the Race and Onto the Farm

IRONMAN week brings plenty of energy to Kona, but there’s another side of Kona waiting just up the mountain.

Take a break from the crowds and join us at the Kona Coffee & Tea Farm for a glimpse into the agricultural side of the Big Island. Our farm tour offers a chance to slow down, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and experience where Kona coffee begins.

Walk among the coffee trees, learn about how coffee is grown and harvested, and discover what makes Kona’s growing region so unique. Along the way, you’ll get a different perspective on the island where it is at a slower, more grounded pace than race week in town.

Whether you’re an athlete looking for a change of scenery, a visitor wanting to experience more of Kona, or a local who wants to reconnect with the land, the farm is a perfect place to step away from the excitement of IRONMAN week.

Come see a different side of Kona where the pace is slower, the views stretch toward the ocean, and every cup of coffee has a story that begins in the soil.
