Mamaki: Traditional Hawaiian Healing

Mamaki: Traditional Hawaiian Healing

Mamaki, a native Hawaiian plant found nowhere else on Earth, has long been used for medicinal, ceremonial and healing purposes in Hawaii. A needleless/stingless member of the nettle family, Pipturus albidus or mamaki has dark-green leaves with vibrant red veins and can be found as a bush, shrub or tree, growing up to 30 feet. The leaves have long been coveted for their tonic, uplifting and strengthening properties, while their fruit and seeds have historically been used to aid in digestion and as a tonic for internal organs. The fruit were also traditionally used in pregnancy to aid in muscle relaxation during birth.

At Kona Coffee & Tea, we see the value and importance of mamaki and have high regard for the plant's history as well as its asserted healing properties. Currently we source our mamaki tea from local, reliable and environmentally friendly partners, and we recently planted mamaki on our farm that we hope to share with our community in the next few years.

Here is a list of just a few of the many benefits attributed to Hawaiian Mamaki

  • Leaves/tea used to open lungs and respiratory system for allergies, smoke, and/or VOG

  • Leaves/tea used primarily as a tonic, aiding in depression, lethargy, weakness, listlessness

  • Leaves/tea used as tonic for internal organs including the stomach, liver, intestines

  • Leaves/tea used to lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and soothe the nervous system

  • High in antioxidants including catechins, chlorogenic acid and rutin

  • Fruit and seeds traditionally used as a laxative and to aid in giving birth

  • Fruit used to aid in wound healing

Mamaki tea can be brewed like your typical herbal tea. The flavor is refreshing, with subtle fruit notes and mild acidity. Add a bit of lemon juice to really brighten up the flavors. Some of our favorite recipes use a ratio of 1-2 tsp per 8 oz of warm water (140-150F) and a brew time around 5 minutes. We also recommend brewing your tea hot and adding some of our Kona Coffee & Tea Estate Kona Snow Honey. The tea is great whether you drink it hot or cold. In the hot summer months we really enjoy a strong batch poured over ice.
